It was the first o f three historical d ramas that Vlá ?il made during th e Czech New Wave (technically he is n't really a part of the New Wave, however t hese films wer e ma de du ring the sa me era of artistic freedom ), preced ing his more we ll known Marketa La zaro vá (1967) and Valley of the B ees (1968). S et in the late 16 th Century during t he Catholic Reformation, in the Moravia n Karst, situated in what is now the Easte rn Czech Republic , it tells the tale of a miller ( Vítezslav Vejrazka), an d his son Jan (Vít Olmer), who come und er su spicion and are investigated by a Jesuit priest of th e Inquisition (Miroslav Macháche k), when rumors of witchcraft are spread by the local regent (Cestmír R anda), who is je alous of the miller's prosperity a nd degree of res pect among the loc al populace. As expected from Vlá?il, thi s film is a stu nning experience all the way throug h. Fr om the open ing sho t, an ominous manipulation of perspect ive with a clo se up of a mangle d figure of Christ domi nating th e foreground a gainst a tiny figure in black walking along the horizon, to the breathtak ing confrontati onal f inale inside t he vast stal actite fille d Karst caverns, it is a wonderful display of visual mastery. Maybe not quite as impre ssive a s Marketa Lazarová, but still full of asto nishin g imagery. As seen from unique angles and distinct points of view which highlight t he dir ector's remarkable sense of awareness of framing, m otion, and positioning on the emotional and drama tic tone of the s cene. The most memorable being a repeated shot where the camera is s uspe nded a nd launche d wit h speed through th e air towards the miller 9;s door. The story here is a s imple one and I wo uld say more accessible than his l ater works. With a conventional structure emphasi zed as mu ch by its plot a nd characters, than by its expressioni stic cinematography or authentic historical detail. T he event s play out without much surprise, and there is a strong underlying, almost s upern atural, mysterious aspect that is left unresolved, in fact barely explored, which is slightly disappointing, bu t only because it& #39;s so fascinat ing that I wish the re wa s more . Acting is great all aro und. P articularl y the villai ns: Miros lav Machách ek as the priest, casting a siniste r and imposi ng shadow wher ever he goes, and Cestmír Randa a s th e weasel l ike regent behind all th e persecution. Whi le Vít Olm er brings a charismati c leading man presence in his rol e as the miller& #39;s son Jan, in love wi th the lov ely orphan girl M artina (Karl a Cha dimová) , who becom es a dangerous object of rivalry between Jan and other young men of the v illage. The film a lso features th e evocat ive music of Zden ?k Liška (perhaps the most prolific composer of the Czech New Wave). In this his second of eleven collaborations with V lá?il, his c omposit ions are u sed spari ngly , but to g reat e ffect, complimen ting but nev er o verpoweri ng a sce ne. The b est example of which ca n be heard in an amaz ingly sh ot c elebration a nd dance sequence a t the end of the second act. The Devi l's Trap might not be a masterp iece, but it is still a strong effo rt, with a fascin ating str aightforward story and a glorious his torical setting capt ured beautifully by Vlá?il' s unmistakable visual pr owess. A fine work that w ould also be the per fect starter p late to pre pare yourself for the c hallenging feast of Marketa Lazarová or The Valley of the Be es. It even h as an easy to d igest running time.
