The Germans are smas hing through Belgi  um and the allies  are in ret reat.  Hazel Bell amy is on a  committee with Lady Prudence Fairfax to find temporary ho mes for the 5 000 or more Belgian refugee s that have come to Britain. Feeling an obligation to set an example, Hazel agrees t o take in  a family and exp  ecting an aristocratic famil  y of 3, rece ives an e xtended   family of 5 peasant farmers who speak no English. They take residence in the servants' quarters but with the language b arrier, it all pr oves to be a bit much  for  both side s. The servants find  the r efugees odd in their tas tes and their re fusal to  take a bath in particular offe nds the  m.
