At Mac's urging, Norma trie d to reason with Paul, but he insists that he lo ves Barbara and laughs her off. Ba rbara is equally disdainful of h er a nd agrees to meet Paul for dinner that night at his apartment. N orma 9;s husband Steph en La wry is a s cientist leavin g that nigh t on a trip to test a secret invention on wh ich he has been working for the gover nment and the war effort. Worried abou t Ba rbara, she uses a pretext n ot to accompany Steph en and goes to t he apartment . Wh en Barbara arrives, she fin ds Paul';s dead body and thinks tha t Norma has killed him, even though Norma insists that he wa s dead when she ar rived. Barbara threat ens to call the pol ice unless s he leaves S tephen. F eari ng that a scandal will hurt him, Norma agrees. No rma then turns to Ma c, who goes to Pa ul' s apartment wi th Fr iday and Marty, only to fi nd the body and the rug un der it missing. A ma n arrives to re place the rug and Mac hides in a clos et, overh earing a telephon e ca ll t o Norma's num ber from "Gabriel" to "Vera." Mac accidentally gives himself away, but with Friday& #39;s help over powers Gab riel, who refu ses to talk. Mac has M arty hide him to keep him under wraps. Nor ma returns to her country home unexpectedl y, which dis courages an espionage ring that i ncludes her butler, Hansen, from bre aking into Stephen';s safe an d stealin g his plans. Th ey have kill ed Gerente, who was also an agent, an d hidden th e body. Mac arrives with Friday at Norma's house and pretends to be he r curmu dgeonl y " ;Uncle Mac" who has co me for a visit. His blindness lu lls any suspicions Hansen might have about him. Shortly thereafter, Barbar a comes home from an ";emergency rehea rsal&q uot;, called to g et her out of the hous e by her direct or, Ch eli Sco tt, who inveigles an i nvitation t o spend the night at the Lawry home. Unknown to Barb ara and Nor ma, Cheli is the ring leader of the spies. Cheli ordered Paul killed because his affection for Barbara was beginning to limit his effec tiveness, and she i mmediately suspec ts Mac is not what he seems. Ga briel&# 39;s wife Vera, the La wrys' maid, is also a pa rt of the plot. When G abriel does not re turn home, Vera becomes hysterical with worry. Mac secretl y asks V era to meet him in the greenhouse, using he r worr y about Gabriel as a lure. She is observed by the others, howeve r, and is kill ed by Hansen befo re she can reach Mac. The spies cut t he h ouse& #39;s telepho ne wires so that Mac a nd Norma cannot cal l the police, and Cheli has Mac locked up under guar d. Using his blindness as a distraction, Mac ov erpowers his guard an d releases Friday out a window with instructions to "go home and ge t Marty." St ephen arrives ho me and Cheli th reatens his family if he does not g ive her the final step in creating his invention, whic h was not in the safe. Barbara finally realiz es how much Norma actu ally cares f or her. Mac tries t o sta ll for time, but is locked in the ce llar. When H ansen goes to kill him, Mac has broken the light bulb and his advantage of total darkne ss helps h im ov ercome the spy. Marty and Friday return w ith the police. When Fr iday is spot ted by a l ookou t, Mac overpowers him and is save d from being shot by a nother lookout by Friday.
