Delving deep into t he dusty and long abandonded vaults of b-cinema in sear ch of lost gems always leaves me with a bitte rsweet tas te. On one ha nd the discovery of unex pect ed gems where no one would think them possible is a re warding exper ience. On the other hand though it makes one wonde r how many o f these r emarkable low- budget o dditi es, personal love affairs of directors never quite famous and now all bu t forgotte n, hav e almost for ever slipped from memory? n any case what we have here is a little post-apocal yptic gem from Poland that is r eally better than it has any right to . The dystopian nea r future of O- BI, O-BA fi nds a group of survi vors of t he nuclear war that ravaged the Earth inhabiting an underworld con crete bun ker and bidi ng their time as they wait for the mysterious Ark, an air ship of some kind that will come and save them. T he Ark p roves to be an elaborate hoax, carefully designed to give hope to the malnou rished and desperate denizens of the bunker, while in th e meantim e the dome that separates their miserable existence from the nucl ear winter outside is slowly caving in. What first str iked me about the movie is the design of the bunker and the depiction of the survivor s. The survivors are ga unt, filthy and terrible-looking pe nitents , dres sed in rags and aimlessly wandering t he neon-lit hal ls of the bunker l ike automatons. The bunker is a r undown, s eedy place, with bright neon l ights peering from all side s like the eyes of m alignan t beasts. On one hand it i s a slightly 80's depiction o f the dystopian future but the movie never stoops do wn to MAD MAX cheese. Instead it combines biting political satire w ith the bleak outl ook of a world with no fut ure, b lack comedy with barbs on apathy, religion and power. The survivors , for example, are fed s ome k ind of fl our dropping f rom a tube that hovers in the air - late r on we discov er the food supervisor uses books and the Bible itself as fil ler for this meagre m eal. There are many such short symbolic touches, perhaps n ot life-ch anging or f aith-restor ing, yet playful, clever and inspired. O ne thing i s for sure; O-BI, O-BA is not yo ur run-of-the-mill sci- fi schl ock. It overcome s its modes t budget with cr eativity and has genuine arti stic aspirations bot h from a writin g and directing perspectiv e. My opinion is that i t should have been filmed in black and white instead of colour though. The director uses atmospheric light and shad ow to g reat effect and it would hav e registered even better in stark black and white. The blue-green neon on the o ther hand outst ays its welcome after a while. Just a mino r gripe in an othe rwise solid b-movie with its h eart set i n all the righ t places. Imagine a less b leak THE ROA D (Co rmac McC arthy) being inj ected wit h the satire and hum our of DR.STRANGE LOVE and y ou39;re getti ng there.
