Review: James reviews the new Bentley Continental GT, a nd notes th e new engi ne and subtle ride characteris tics. Believin g tha t the Bentley, with four wheel drive system and a big, powe rful engine, can handle things worse t han a Welsh countrysid e road, James ta kes the car on to a Welsh stage of t he World Rally Champions hip, w ith Kri s Meeke be hind t he wheel, and James being th e co-driver. Since it was Hammo nd's tu rn t o select the c hallenge locat ion, the team went to t he Western Unit ed States. Jere my selected the Lexus LFA, Ja mes chose the new Aston Martin Va nquish, a nd Ri char d took the SRT Viper. After a brief drive in the Nevada desert, the trio headed to L as Vega s Motor Spee dway, specifically the drag stri p, to compete in d rag races organized by th e Las Vegas Police Dep artment; who m or ganized it with the theo ry that allowing p eople to drag race, lega lly, at a clos ed circuit, woul d preven t street racing . Despite the high perfor mance of their cars, t he trio were be aten by modified pro duction cars, and 4WD cars, in each of their dr ag races. In the end, James won the chal lenge by being hit only 17 times. Challenge, Part 3: Dep arti ng Willow Spring s, the g roup headed for Los Ang eles, C alifornia. In order to do " real world&q uot; te sting, R ichar d devised a challeng e to see who cou ld burn the best elevens. The t hree instead ended up drawing a ph allus and left L A. T he tea m then stayed for a ni ght in Palm Springs. H owever, the producers ga ve the m a fin al challenge. The three would d rive from Palm Springs to the Mexican bo rder at Calexico the f ollowing m orning, and the la st to make it to the Me xican border would ha ve to tra vel into th e countr y itself to drive the Mas trett a MXT, a Mexican sports car made fun of by the pres enters in a n earlier series, for a la ter segment on the show. In reve nge for taking them t o America, J eremy and Jame s sabotaged Hammond 39;s Vipe r, causi ng hi m to lose 10 minutes in the race. Despite maki ng a stop for fuel, Jeremy made it to the finish line f irst, with James in second. Richard t hen walked to the bo rder being the last person to arri ve. At the stu dio, James and Jeremy end by saying that th e Viper was awful and that the Va nquish an d LF A were amazing. 150 Series 19, Episode 3 10 February 2013 Amy Macdonald R eview: Jer emy r eviews the Toyota GT 86 and the Subaru BRZ. T he cars a re almost identical, bu t Jeremy prefers the Toy ota GT86. The Stig then completed a lap of the Test Track in 1:31:3. News: They discuss the new Subaru Impreza, which i s not coming to UK, and they then talk about the new M asera ti Quattro porte. Challenge , Part 1: The produc ers ha ve reserved a single ti cket to a footb all m atch at the San Siro in Mila n, Nort hern Italy. The trio h ave a rac e from W embley Stad ium to the San Siro. Jeremy d rives t he Sh elby Mustan g GT500 and Richard and James travel o n public transpo rt. Simila r to t he previo us race to Monte Carlo, Richard and James a re not allo wed to use a ny cars, and Jeremy is not allowed to use any trains. Accor ding to Jeremy, since the last epic race, the trains have become faster and boats have become slower. Richard and Jam es opened up a big lead whilst travelling on the Eurosta r, and arrive in P aris while J eremy was st ill cross ing the English Cha nnel on a ferry. After reaching F rance, Jeremy discove rs that the Mustang only holds 50 litres in its fuel ta nk. After leaving Paris, Ri chard and James discuss what to do upon arriving in Mila n — as there are two of them but only one ticke t. Hundred s of miles behind, Jerem y ends part 1 of the challenge stating out loud, " ;I9;m gonna lose!" During one of her practice runs, Amy accidentally de stroyed on e of th e runway l ight s, whic h Je remy gives to her afte r revealing the lap time. Challe nge, Part 2: The high spee d TGV slowed down as it ap proached the mountain s that surr ound Northern Ita ly. Jeremy began to catch up and w as nearly neck and neck w ith t he train, unti l ro ad works at the Mont B lanc Tunnel slow him down . The train starts to accelerate again a nd reaches Northern Italy ahead of Jeremy. Richard and James use a tube network to get to the streets near the finish line. J ames main tains his opposition to run on television and Richar d runs off alone to find the fi nish line, which is at a ba r in the IM Villa Veuve Cliequot. James then assembled a bike w hich h e had hidden in one of his bags a nd rides to the bar, only to find tha t Rich ard is a lready t here and has won the r ace and the ticket to t he fo otball ma tch. The Stig did laps of each car, the Focus being the slowest at 1:29.6, the Astra VXR at 1:28. 3, and the Megan e in 1:27. 7. Jeremy b reaks the dashboard and repl aces it con siderin g it to be too complicated for elders. Richard asks for the airbags saying that it is d angerous for t he elderly who are as delicate as chil dren, and that he needs it for a safety feature. Jeremy ma kes a speedometer which reads 20 mph at the top sp eed, he also uses an old desi gn switch for rear fog light which does not hing. Jeremy installs a pet-cage and replaces the back seat with high seat chairs and the Fiat badge w ith a Rover one. They paint it in be ige after observi ng the shade of a hearing aid. Richar d uses water-resistant fabric as seat covers, and while s titc hing hurts his eye. They comp lete the c ar and end the p art 1 with Ric hard wearing heavy bandages over his le ft eye. News: V olkswagen will launch GTI versi on of the new Golf and GT version of Up wil l be launched. Ki a will launc h the Pro Cee 9;d GT. The Mini Pacema n is launched, and the trio m ock th e front en d of the car, claiming that i t looks depressing. The t rio agree that th e Britis h are the b est drivers. The new car is com pletely red esigned, 400 kg ligh ter due to Al uminiu m body, has active s uspension, new gear box, minimalist das hboard and offer s bette r comfort. James then races it against Terr aMax at Nevada Auto motive Test Ce ntre, Nevada. The race was to a h ill 10 mile across, passing through rocky terrain, hillock, mud, river and sand-track s. TerraMa x was switched to d rone mode during the race to deflate the tyres a nd take a short -cut . The Rang e Rov er 39;s automatic Terrain Response System is demonstrat ed. James takes a l onger route to ascend the hil l but still wins th e race. At the studio, the t rio consider the drive rless cars to be not very pract ical. Star In A Reasonably Priced Car: James McAvoy d rove the Ki a Cee'd around the Test Track with a lap of 1:43.6 despite having less experien ce of driv ing cars. He drove ov er grassy patch in the last corne r but manages to keep th e ca r under control. Challe nge, Part 2 : Jeremy and Richard road-test th eir car at C hristchurch, Dorset. The c ar has lar ge front bumpers made u p of foam, larg e rear-view mirrors, squea king ball under the bra ke-pedal, larg e magnifying-glass on the das hboard, sa t nav (voi ced by Richard Briers) wit h only four destina tons. The car h as an artifi cial cat on the roo f which later fell o ver on the way o f Bingo hall. Richa rd late r shows his system t o find the location of parked car (t he car a ctivates a flar e and the n release s a balloo n). Jeremy shows that the radio only plays Horse of the Year Show theme on a loop, whi ch b oth later find to be irresistible to clap along. The name o f the car is revealed to be The Jam es. They pick up thre e elderly ladies from a pens ioners' home for road-testing and drive them to a bowling cl ub wher e it is shown that Richard fi tted the airbag at the rear for parking assist which i nflates t he airbag on close proximity. Jeremy and Richard buy food for p icnic, cho osing only British foods. They attach the shopping trolley to Tow hitch and head for picn ic. The roof of the car leaks as it rains. Jeremy and Richard end up choosing a picn ic spot on roadsid e where they find the trolley t o be damage d during reversing and the food to be soaked, howev er they ate the food which was not ruined. The next day both le ave Chris tchurch and J eremy shows his system to prevent the car from being drive n on t he wrong side of the road, the car initially sounds alarm an d later the tyres, doors and other parts o f the car explode which stops the car a nd rende rs it immobi le. The episode was shot in 20 12. Challenge, Part 1: Buy used estate cars for up to £1,500 in Bri tain and rep ort at a small villa ge i n rural Uganda. Jere my a rrives in a BMW 528i Touring, Richard in a Subaru Impreza WRX Estate and James in a V olvo 850R Wagon. The c hallenge is to f ind the true source o f the river N ile. They set off an discover that exp loring isn't as difficu lt as first thought when t hey go on a nic e easy dr ive an d find Lake Victoria, of wh om the Vict orian Explorers thought was the source of t he Nile. Howeve r they are then told that it is not th e actual source of the Nile and there were two other disputed loc ations for it, o ne in Rwa nda and one in Burundi . However, Jeremy Clarkson ins iste d that both of thes e locations were wrong and d ecided to head west towards Lake Edward to s ee whether there was a link betw een tha t lake and Lake Kivu in Rwanda. In their jo urney west, where they visit the Ente bbe Airport and from t here se e the Ford Scorpio Estate back-up car. They co ntinue int o Kampal a, Uganda 9;s C apita l City where they get held up in a traffic jam overnight, th e most hurrendous tr affic they'd e ver seen. They con tinue on well-maintained highways west finding their tr ip incredibly e asy b efore reaching the t own of M barara in the sou thwest of the country , via a st op in Jezza, a vi llage in Mpigi Di strict. Here they sta y in a dis gusting hotel, afte r driving through tea plantations in an attempt to discover a lo vely teahouse h otel, which in the mind of Richard, was bound to fo und due to tea programmes he'd seen. In Mbarara they st ayed in th e Economic Lodge with Jeremy having a bed wi th faeces on it. T hey left the hotel disgusted before R ichar d ha s the idea t o ma ke the cars 'hote ls'. James modifies his V olvo by adding a library , Richard adds a cook er and Jeremy add s a coffi n. The coffin he uses to put his clothes in, he sleeps on Egyp tian C otton. They leav e for Lake Edwar d, ca mpin g overnight there because o f its beauty before headin g in search of the river head ing for Lak e Kivu. None of the rivers connect the la ke as they a ll head east ra ther than south. The y give up, leaving th em disap pointed. Then Jeremy looks at a map and disco vers th e source of the Nil e must be on th e other side of Lake Victo ria. H is reasoning is that the Medi terranean Sea is effectively an inland s ea and so Gibraltar is the true mo uth of the Nile, ra ther than Alexandria in Egypt. Aft er discover ing this the y decide that they m ust d rive straight to the other side of Lake Victoria to get to the southeast coast i n Tanzania near the S erengeti.
